So today I turn 42 and I sit back or lean forward to think about when I was 12 and had my only true birfday party. It involved all of my friends from 14th street in Milwaukee. It was a cool time up in that two story duplex. Mom got a angle food cake with white icing and served up the bug juice for all that came.
Howard, Mark, Anthony, Ricky, and the rest of the Olive St. crew all came and we did what most black kids do around xmas back in 78'. Pops came over and dropped off his gift and waited for me to open it. It was a fly watch digital to be exact from Star Distributors in Chicago...So I was the first in the neighborhood to rock a digital watch. I was gold plated with a black band and the face was red with a LED read out.
As I pushed up my black horned rimmed bifocals I remember that I had an advantage over everyone in the hood. For one my bday was today and two, I was an only child. So everything up under that white fake snow painted on tree was mine. That was the scene of the fun cause my boyz we like open thi open that. I can't catch too much of an ass whoopin for doing it so I went straight for another box...I opened up another small and slender box and wouldn't you know it was a silver watch with a read face. This looked like one of them Seiko watches now that was dope too.
Of course we would go outside for the rest of the day and do what we did which around that time of year was play football.
Fast forward to now. With my Mom no longer here it's pops and I...he travels down from the Brew to visit me every year which is cool to get him up outta there. I don't do the presents for me thing too much any more. People always want to buy you clothes and stuff...well with me I'd rather just do my own traditional thing which is to get a big fat steak and eat it before the restaurants close in the afternoon.
So that's what I am going to do today, maybe one other thing and that's it except for going to LA Fitness or go golfing...
